TechCrunch Classics

Techcrunch has published thousands of blog posts over its nearly 5 and a half years. Many are good one-day stories, some we'd like to forget, but others are gems. These classics are just as interesting today as when they were first written. Why Michael is a pirate. The age of process journalism. The best ways you can get blogged. Our first AOL official meeting. Plus, some of the major news we broke. But try discovering them. It's nearly impossible. That's one of the downsides of a reverse chronology blog. There is a solution. Presenting TechCrunch Classics. A page that will keep an updated list of memorable and favorite posts.

Sanyo Pedal Juice battery pack powers your wah-wah without distortion

Sanyo Pedal Juice battery pack powers your wah-wah without distortion
A good roadie can be identified by two things: a wardrobe composed entirely of darks and bulging pockets full of batteries. Sanyo would like to let those tireless workers downsize to some slimmer black jeans with its new Pedal Juice battery pack, which is rocking a little Eneloop technology inside and can power a whole slew of daisy-chained devices. Charge it up for 3.5 hours and it'll provide 9V DC of output to whatever you like, powering a 10mA effects pedal for a whopping 50 hours. That's about 10 times longer than a simple 9V battery and, unlike one of those, the Pedal Juice will provide a constant 9V right up until it's dead. It even promises less electrical interference than using an AC adapter. All that for $149.99, which may sound like a lot for a battery pack, and it is, but real musicians know that success doesn't come cheap.

PayPal to launch a new, social, group-buying tool called Shoptimist

Shoptimist from PayPalWith the a groan-worthy name, and equally tired slogan -- "Positively awesome shopping!" -- PayPal looks set to launch a new service called Shoptimist.

Details are thin, but it looks like Shoptimist will be a Groupon with emphasis on real-world, physical products. Fellow shoppers will band together to get cheaper deals from suppliers -- and the more people that join in, the better the deal. That's where the social aspect comes in: you'll want to add friends to your 'purchasing group' so that you can open up the cheapest prices. No doubt, all of your recent purchases will be fed through to your Facebook wall, too.

There also seems to be a 'sweepstakes' element to Shoptimist -- like this Facebook page for a chance to win! -- but I suspect that's just to drum up initial interest in the service.

Playboy releases over 650 issues spanning 56 years on a big, black hard drive

Playboy Hard Drive
Last Christmas it was 120 years of National Geographic, and this year it's an equally beautiful but very different vista: 56 years of Playboy on a 250GB hard drive. That link is safe to click, but the online shop linked from there isn't. There are also some 'free samples,' if you want to check out the 'digital magazine' experience before you buy.

The archive, which costs $299.95, features every single issue of the magazine from December 1953 through to December 2009, from Marilyn Monroe and Ursula Andres, to Drew Barrymore and Denise Richards. This isn't just an archive of the Playmates, either: all of the articles and adverts are included too.
