iOS 6: Is it time for Apple to revamp the Home screen?

At Macworld 2007 Steve Jobs pulled the original iPhone from his pocket, held it up high above the stage, and showed off the app launcher-based Home screen... that's pretty much remained the same ever since. That's not entirely true, of course. Apple quickly added the ability to create WebClip icons for websites, and to re-arrange and delete them. With iOS 2 (iPhone OS 2) they added native apps to that mix. They increased the number of Home pages. They added Spotlight. They added wallpaper. With iOS 4 they layered in the multitasking fast app switcher. They layered in folders. The iPad, and the iPad alone, got landscape Home screen support. With iOS 5 they layered in Notification Center and Siri. Is it time for something more?

Burrito Bison is a simple game for gummy bear lovers

burritobison
Burrito Bison is a pretty simple game, but if you're into gummy bears you might find it addictive.

As you may have guessed from the name, you're a bison (not a burrito, though). In the course of your day-to-day grocery shopping, you're abducted into a bag of gummy bears, and must now fend for yourself.

At the beginning of each round you launch yourself onto the marching gummy (gummi?) bears, while you're being watched by a huge crowd of even more gummy bears. Your goal is to keep bouncing on the bears and earn more and more money while you do it. Every time you hit a gummy bear, you lose some momentum. If you hit the floor, you basically lose all of it.

But don't give up just yet! You have an emergency thrust which you can use to gain some momentum and keep bouncing on those bears. This extra thrust gets refilled as you hit more bears.

There are also special gummy bears that give you extra thrust or extra money. The money comes in handy at the end of each round, when you can shop for cool stuff to make your bison even more effective against those gummy bears.

It's a fun and colorful game that kept my interest for quite some time, and almost sent me running to the closest store to get some gummy bears!

Google Latitude check-in deals now available across the US

Recently, Google has been busy beefing up Latitude to make it more competitive with other location apps -- and more fun to use. Location history was added recently, iOS users can post check-ins via Latitude, and now Google has begun rolling out location-based deals which are tied to the service.

If you're in the U.S., you can now score local savings at participating merchants by checking in with Latitude. Google will also be offering "status deals," which users can unlock by visiting a particular merchant on a regular basis. Mashable notes three status levels: regular, VIP, and guru -- though partners can apparently customize those titles if they choose.

Right now deals are available from merchants like American Eagle Outfitters, Arby's, Finish Line, Macy's, Quiznos, and RadioShack.

Use Richard Branson's Severed Head to Cool Your Drink [Drinks]

I'm not sure about you, but I find the idea of having an effigy of Sir Richard Branson floating in my beverage a tad creepy. The fancy new ice cubes, shaped like the British entrepreneur's severed head, will adorn the drinks upper class customers of Virgin Atlantic so that Sir Richard can "travel with you in spirit." Windows 8 to feature adaptive Aero colorization, get it now on Windows 7

windows 8 aero colorization aura
While we've still yet to see anything truly Earth-shattering, the tandem of Rafael Rivera and Paul Thurrott continues to churn out insight about interesting new features they've discovered in Windows 8 milestone 3. The latest discovery is that Aero in Windows 8 will be able to automatically adapt itself to match your current wallpaper image. It's a bit like what Windows 7 already does with your taskbar icons: if a program alert needs your attention, the icon will glow using the predominant color (e.g. Firefox should glow orange).

And yes, you can already make Windows 7 behave this way if you like. Over at CodePlex, there's a little program called Aura that parks itself in your system tray and automatically adjusts your window borders to compliment your wallpaper images. The effect is quite nice, and you can try it out by minimizing your windows and cycling through your theme's wallpapers (right click on your desktop and choose next desktop background).

Highlight Hunter Software Review

I’m going to make an admission:  I’m not a big fan of video.  I mean who wants to sit through hours of boring footage just to get to those few exciting moments? And who can be bothered editing their video to capture just the highlights? Of course digital video, YouTube, and the proliferation of video-capable devices makes [...]

Advanced Easy Editor Goes Bare Bones, Then Breaks Out the Sandpaper

Sometimes too much of a good thing in free software can create bad impressions. For instance, some of the free stuff so easily available in Linux distro package managers is so archaic that newcomers to the OS might understandably shriek in horror. Don't get me wrong. I absolutely am a big fan of FOSS applications.

Verizon, Comcast activate Wonder Twin powers in six more markets with cross-sales deal

Verizon and Comcast activate Wonder Twin powers in six more markets with cross-sales deal

Comcast and Verizon sitting in a tree -- well, you know how the rest of that song goes. Although the relationship between Comcast and Sprint has been a bit frosty as of late, the cable operator continues to make nice with Verizon after last year's spectrum agreement, inking a deal to sell each other's services in six additional markets. This means consumers in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver-Colorado Springs, Kansas City, Minneapolis-St. Paul and Salt Lake City can now sign up for Verizon services via Comcast and vice-versa. The cross-selling service was first launched in San Francisco, Portland and Seattle earlier this year. To sweeten the pot, both companies are also including deals such as prepaid Visa cards valued between $50 and $300, a double data offer for Comcast's Xfinity Blast! high-speed internet service and a double data plan for Verizon's 4G LTE service. For now, both companies are likely keeping their fingers crossed as they wait for regulatory approval for the aforementioned spectrum deal. In the meantime, folks looking for more details on this kumbaya moment can peruse the PR after the break.

Install the Windows Phone 7 NoDo update regardless of your carrier

windows phone 7 nodoSome of you who own Windows Phone 7 devices are still waiting for your pre-NoDo preparation update -- never mind NoDo itself. A few workarounds have been posted, but unfortunately they didn't work unless your carrier had completed testing and was ready to schedule the update.

Now, however, the Chevron WP7 team's Chris Walshie has delivered a handy little utility that will allow you to update any Windows Phone 7 device -- regardless of your carrier.
  1. Download and install the Windows Phone Support Tool (x86 or x64) and the ChevronWP7 Updater (x86 or x64)
  2. Launch ChevronWP7 Updater and select your language. If your language isn't listed, stop and do not update.
  3. If were running WP7 build 7004 (you can verify in Zune) then run the updater twice.
Once the process completes, you should be able to copy and paste to your heart's content. Let's just hope all this update foolishness gets sorted out before we're supposed to receive Mango.
