Dell's IPS and multitouch ST2220T finally shipping to tilting monitor seekers

Well, it took a bit longer than we anticipated for Dell's glorious 21.5-inch multitouch ST2220T monitor with an IPS panel to roll into e-tailers -- last we had heard it was planned for late Fall 2010 -- but we promise you, this one is better late than never. The 1920 x 1080-resolution display is finally available through both Dell and LogicBuy, and if you're anything like us, just a glance at the picture above has you figuring out just how quickly you can get together $310 (there's a $20 discount now and free shipping from LogicBuy). Naturally, the IPS display is said to provide extra wide viewing angles, but perhaps even more enticing is the monitor's A-frame stand, which tilts the screen forward, backward and even flat. Put that all together with its infrared multitouch and you've got a larger than life tablet for gaming and watching Netflix. So, you blowing some of that Christmas cash or what?

IKEA, the lord of bland, cheap, spruce and spartan Scandinavian furniture, has released a toasting app just in time for New Year's Eve. Pick from the huge range of glasses and drinks, and enjoy a virtual toast!

The app, which is called Skål!, or "Cheers!" in English, has a neat trick up its sleeve: it uses the rear-facing camera to create a backdrop for your virtual drink. Then, as you drink from your iPhone (or iPad, or iPod touch), the drink, its contents and the background rotate to complete the illusion. You can even save a copy of the scene, if you're the kind of person that likes to keep mementos.

The app is free, which makes this our top pick for both saving money and preventing any cataclysmic chundering this New Year's Eve.

XBMC 10.0 released with new add-on system and a ton of improvements

XBMC is a fantastic media center application, and while it works well for dedicated HTPCs, it also plays nice on desktop computers, alongside your other software. But now XBMC has hit the version 10.0 milestone with a plethora of changes and improvements. Here's a small sample of the goodies you can look forward to in 10.0:

• Add-on support: The biggest change -- add-ons can now be browsed, installed, and updated from within XBMC itself, making it easy to change XBMC's look-and-feel or give it new functionality.
• WebM/VP8 codecs: You can now watch videos encoded using Google's latest open-source video format right from within XBMC.
• Hardware acceleration added for Windows Vista and Windows 7.
• Linux improvement: VDAPU support improved and VAAPI support added.

There's a comprehensive changelog with much more, but why not just take the new, free, XBMC for a spin?

Firefox 4 may be getting tabs in title bar option

So much for Firefox 4 already being feature-frozen! It now looks as though several additional changes may land before the final release of Firefox 4 lands in early 2011. Among them: tabs in the title bar.

As with Google Chrome, your tabs will only move to the topmost area of the window when maximized. The feature has yet to be delivered to the Firefox 4 nightly builds, but you can download experimental versions from developer Bill Gianopoulos. Windows and Linux versions are available at the moment. Gianopoulos states "These builds are essentially the same as the corresponding Official Trunk Nightly Builds" but notes that his builds include "not yet landed fixes for some MathML issues, and User Interface changes planned for Firefox 4, as well as bugs that I am currently working on or find particularly annoying."

Adblock Plus for Chrome now available

We told you it was coming soon, but we didn't know precisely how soon: Wadlimir Palant has already pushed the first beta version of Adblock Plus for Google Chrome. It was just four days ago that TechCrunch reported that Palant had changed his mind about never releasing a Chrome port -- citing reasons like not wanting to maintain two unrelated projects and the availability of capable alternatives like AdThwart.

That's all changed, however, and AdThwart has become the foundation of Adblock Plus for Chrome. The first release includes improved filters, updated code to bring the extension more inline with its Firefox cousin, and better XHTML support.

Those of you who already had AdThwart installed should be automatically updated, and new users can install ABP from the Chrome Extensions Gallery.

YouTube Trends launches, now even easier to be virally hip

Have you ever wanted to be in at the beginning of a viral YouTube trend? Well, now's your chance, thanks to YouTube Trends.

There are two parts of Trends: a website (which is actually a rather fancy blog), and the Trends Dashboard. The website shows you currently-trending videos (it picks out four new videos at 4am and 4pm every day), and also offers more in-depth contextual analysis of the streaming video universe.

The Trends Dashboard is a totally different beast. It lets you see which videos are trending in a specific demographic, with the ability to sort by location (US state, or country), age group, and sex. Immediately, you can see that Lego Black Ops is very popular with those between 13 and 17, but that adults are currently digging the Metrodome Roof Collapse.

If that wasn't cool enough, you can do a side-by-side comparison of up to three different demographics. There are some shocking differences, even between the east and west coast of America; while the teenage girls of Atlanta are loving Bruno Mars, those in Los Angeles are into Justin Bieber. If you're into other cultures -- if you're a Japanophile, for example -- you could also use this tool to find videos that are right up your alley.

Apple's AirPlay might be getting all the attention lately but it's hardly the first solution for wirelessly streaming media to the television. Far from it. In 2003, the Digital Living Network Alliance (DLNA) formed with its first set of interoperable products hitting the market in 2004. Since then, the alliance has certified thousands of products supported by more than 245 member companies, 29 of whom are listed as "promoter members" including such heavyweights as Sony, Nokia, Samsung, Toshiba, Verizon, AT&T Lab, LG, Qualcomm, Cisco, Microsoft, Panasonic, Intel, HP, and Motorola. Pretty much everyone but Apple. Recently, HTC joined the DLNA ranks with the introduction of two smartphones -- the Desire Z and Desire HD -- and a tiny media streamer known as the HTC Media Link, HTC's first attempt to gain a foothold in the living room. Over the last week we've been testing the Desire Z (a Eurofied T-Mobile G2) with the Media Link, lazily streaming video, music, and images around the house using a myriad of sources and controllers from Apple, Samsung, Microsoft, and Western Digital.
